Chapter 3

“Are you alright?” Josh asked softly for the fourth time as he drove her back to his loft. She sat in the passenger seat shivering, arms wrapped around herself. She felt safe with him. She knew he would protect her, but having someone come after her with a knife had a certain effect.

“Thanks to you, I will be,” she reassured him again. That seemed to mollify him a bit, but it was as if he couldn't quite fathom that they had survived without so much as a cut. For some reason he kept checking on her as if to reassure himself that she had survived. Even though she was sitting right there next to him without a mark on her.

They couldn't call the police about the assault for two reasons. First because the rubbernecking cow in the SUV threatened to press assault charges on Irina for slapping her phone out of her hands. It didn’t matter that the woman violated of California law by not contacting emergency services when someone's life was in danger. The second was because the police were useless, a hindrance or even a hazard at every turn since this started; they couldn't afford the extra trouble.

The whole mess made them both feel even more helpless. Josh gripped the wheel with white knuckles again, jaw set and eyes blazing whenever they weren't turned to her. When they were, they softened and the warmth and desperation in them almost brought tears to her eyes.

“What do we do now?” she asked breathlessly. Checking on Ben was perfunctory but reassuring. They forgot to pick up the burritos, which was fine with her. She had no idea when she would be hungry again.

“Honestly? Shots. I'll set them up, we can knock them back. I am not one to go Paulie's way most of the time, but..” He stopped at a light and watched a box truck blunder past in the stream of traffic. “I need to turn off my brain for a while.”

You could do that with me, she thought as he watched him. You could do that inside of me. She reached over, brushed her fingers over the back of his near hand and felt him shiver a little under her touch.

Maybe I should just seduce him. His ambivalence is killing me. Maybe pushing the issue isn't a dangerous distraction; maybe it's exactly the distraction we both need.

The idea sent a tingle through her that dispelled some of the shock and cold. “I don't think a little of that is bad. Especially under the circumstances. Besides, we'll be together.” No way am I leaving him alone tonight. “We can keep each other out of trouble.”

His scowl faded, gaze warming again. “Okay. Let's do that then.”

The rain quickened into a steady downpour by the time they returned to the loft. She was doubly glad that he got to park inside; electric vehicles didn’t have exhaust to stink up his living space. It was nice to step out of the car without an umbrella even while the rain battered against the metal roof above.
